Some words can influence you to do things that you have never done before. This is one such moment. I could not resist the urge to translate the song 'Yeh kahaani hai diye ki aur toofaan ki'. To know what I mean, watch the song on youtube. The song from the movie Toofan aur Diya (1956) can be heard in the golden voice of Mr.Manna Dey. Lyrics by Mr. Bharath Vyas and music directed by Mr. Vasant Desai.
Here is my translation of these inspiring words:
Nirbal se ladaai balwan ki (2)
(A fight of the strong against weak.)
Yeh kahaani hai diye ki aur toofaan ki (2)
(This story is about a lamp and a storm.)
Ek raath andhiyaari, thi dishaaye kaari-kaari
(A night of darkness with directions unclear,)
Mand-mand pawan tha chal raha
(a gentle wind blew)
Andhiyaare ko mitaane, jag mein jyoth jagaane
(to wipe out the darkness and enlighten the world.)
Ek chhota sa diya tha kahin jal raha
(Somewhere at a distance, a little lamp was aglow.)
Apni dhun mein magan, uske thhan mein agan
(Lost in its own tune, its body filled with fire.)
Uski lau mein lagan bhagwaan ki
(In its being, lied the devotion for its creator.)
Yeh kahaani hai diye ki aur toofaan ki
(This story is about a lamp and a storm.)
Kahin door tha toofaan...
Kahin door tha toofaan, diye se tha balwaan
(Far away was the storm, stronger than the lamp,)
Saare jag ko masalne machal raha
(fervid to trample the entire world.)
Jhaad ho ya pahaad, de woh pal mein ukhaad
(Be it shrub or mountain, it can uproot it in no time.)
Soch-soch ke zameen pe tha uchhal raha
(Choosing wisely, it bounced on the ground.)
Ek nanha sa diya, usne hammala kiya (2)
(One little lamp retaliated.)
Ab dekho leela vidhi ke vidhaan ki
(Now watch the play of destiny.)
Yeh kahaani hai diye ki aur toofaan ki
(This story is about a lamp and a storm.)
Duniya ne saath chhoda, mamta ne mukh moda
(Abandoned by the world, turned away by its own,)
Ab diye pe ye dukh padne laga (2)
(now the lamp could feel the sorrow.)
Par himmat na haar, man mein marna vichaar
(But without losing courage, despite the thought of death,)
Atyaachaar ki hawa se ladne laga
(it fought the wind of oppression.)
Sar uthhaana ya jhukaana, ya bhalaai mein mar jaana
(Face it or bow to it, or die for the greater good.)
Ghadi aayi usske bhi imtihaan ki
(The time has come to take the test.)
Ye kahaani hai diye ki aur toofaan ki
(This story is about a lamp and a storm.)
Phir aisi ghadi aayi (2), ghanghor ghata chhaayi
(Then came the moment covered with dark clouds,)
Ab diye ka bhi dil laga kaanpne
(even the lamp shivered at the sight.)
Bade zor se toofaan, aaya bharata udaan
(With all its might came the storm taking flight)
Uss chhote se diye ka bal maapne
(to check the strength of the little lamp.)
Tab diya dukhiyaara, woh bechaara besahaara
(The sad little lamp, helpless and alone)
Chala daau pe lagaane, baazi praan ki (4)
Chala daau pe lagaane, baazi praan ki
(went ahead and bet its life.)
Yeh kahaani hai diye ki aur toofaan ki
(This story is about a lamp and a storm)
Ladte-ladte woh thakha, phir bhi bhujh na saka (2)
(Tired of fighting, yet glowing.)
Uski jyoth mein tha bal re sachchaai ka
(In its glow lied the strength of truth.)
Chaahe tha woh kamzor, par tooti nahi dor
(Despite being weak, intact was its thread of life.)
Usne peeda tha uthhaaya re bhalaai ka
(It carried the burden for the greater good.)
Huwa nahi woh niraas, chalein jab tak saans
(It was not disheartened, as long as it breathed.)
Usse aas thi prabhu ke wardaan ki
(It hoped for a boon from the Lord.)
Yeh kahaani hai diye ki aur toofaan ki
(This story is about a lamp and a storm.)
Sar patak-patak, pag jhatak-jhatak
(The storm banged its head, stomped its feet.)
Na hata paaya diye ko apni aan se
(It could not separate the lamp from its glory.)
Baar-baar vaar kar, anth mein haar kar
(Striking again and again, it finally gave up.)
Toofaan bhagaa re maidaan se
(The storm fled from the field.)
Atyaachaar se ubhar, jali jyoth amar
(Rid of oppression, glowed the lamp forever.)
Rahi amar nishaani balidaan ki
(The symbol of sacrifice remained immortal.)
Ye kahaani hai diye ki aur toofaan ki
(This story is about a lamp and a storm.)
Nirbal se ladaai balwan ki
(A fight of the strong against weak.)
Yeh kahaani hai diye ki aur toofaan ki
(This story is about a lamp and a storm.)
